British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
