Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
